Like the rest of the world, the UK needs to end our addiction to oil and gas-powered electricity, fast. When the Labour Party came to power in 2024, they made “Clean energy by 2030” a top mission, second only to “Sustained economic growth”.

Unfortunately, the climate and nature crisis, and the crisis of unaffordable energy, will not be solved by continuing the capture of natural resources for private profit, and an economy dominated by powerful vested interests.

Below we look at the technologies which threaten to sabotage the move to cheap renewables that we all deserve. Many of them are still the subject of live debate – it is not too late to change course!

Carbon capture and storage

Nuclear power

Hydrogen

Biomass power

Failure to decentralise grid infrastructure and prioritise local generation

Failure to nationalise key parts of the energy system

Financialisation of the renewables market
