FPA brings ENERGY to tax the rich demo

Members and supporters in London hold the FPA banner. Placards in the background read 'tax the rich'

Today, FPA members and supporters from across the country took to the streets of London.

We joined the People’s Assembly Against Austerity demo with a simple message: stop the cuts, tax the rich and provide Energy For All.

Fuel Poverty Action (FPA) stands alongside our allies in refusing to accept a return to Austerity 2.0. The recent winter fuel payment U-turn and hopes of the two child benefit cap removal show that together we can defeat this agenda.

FPA’s key demand is Energy For All (e4a). Guaranteeing every UK household enough energy to meet essential needs, for free. This surpassed 660,000 petition signatures and our five-point Manifesto was signed by over 250 organisations including The People’s Assembly.

While Labour fails us on both poverty and climate, and Reform attempts to pit these interlinked crises against one another, Energy For All more than ever offers the solutions to delivering energy, climate and economic justice.

Ofgem, like Rachel Reeves, tells us there’s no money. So why should we accept half a trillion pounds in profit being extracted by private companies over five winters?

e4a could be funded by ending the fossil fuel industry’s huge subsidies, proper taxation of the energy giants, and higher tariffs on luxury use exceeding our needs. But also by ending the scandal of electricity prices being pegged to the far higher cost of gas, and through fair distribution of cheap renewable energy

Currently, billions of pounds are paid through our energy bills to turn off wind and solar farms during the windiest and sunniest periods. Ultra-cheap electricity being wasted could power 3 million homes for free for an entire year, or give every UK home 10% of its electricity free.

If you missed us today, join us next time! We’ll be outside the Labour Party conference demanding our fair share of cheap electricity, produced by the wind and sun, to meet everyone’s needs. Sign up to our mailing list to keep in touch.
