July 17th, 2025. Wind and Solar: the Global Transition

Session 20

Big changes are taking place the world over. Electric cars on our roads. Solar panels on our rooftops. Vast wind farms along our coasts. And with these new structures, the reassurance that a movement away from carbon-belching fossil fuels to more sustainable sources of energy is underway. But, the extraordinary growth of alternative energy has yet to make a dent in ever-growing carbon emissions.

Following on from last month, on July 17, we’re going beyond the UK, towards a global view of the movement towards renewable energy. And having a closer look at what it means for people and the planet to “transition” away from fossil fuels.

With a focus on the resources needed, and their impact, we’ll be asking whether the global shift to renewable energy is the one we’re after. Are we blinkered by our faith in the promise of clean energy? Are our planet’s resources and people’s labour continuing to be diverted to soaring profits and rising emissions? Which course should we demand and take to ensure renewables don’t also renew fossil fuels’ legacy of planetary degradation?
